Traceability Is Becoming the New Passport for Global Trade

Why knowing where a product came from — and being able to prove it — is becoming essential to market access, food safety, compliance and international sourcing.

For decades, international trade has depended on documentation.

Commercial invoices. Packing lists. Certificates of origin. Bills of lading. Customs declarations.

Those documents remain essential.

But another layer of information is becoming increasingly important: the ability to follow a product through its supply chain and connect it to reliable information about where it came from, who handled it, when it moved and what happened along the way.

That is traceability.

And increasingly, traceability is becoming more than a quality-control tool or sustainability initiative.

It is becoming part of the infrastructure of global trade.

From "Where Did This Come From?" to "Can You Prove It?"

Knowing the country of origin is not always enough.

A product may originate in Brazil, but buyers, regulators or customers may increasingly need more specific information.

Which producer supplied it? Which farm or facility? Which production lot? When was it processed? Where was it stored? Which shipment did it enter? Can that information be connected through the supply chain?

The shift is subtle but important.

International trade has traditionally relied heavily on documents that describe a shipment.

Modern traceability increasingly requires data that describes the history of the product itself.

Food Safety Is One Major Driver

Food provides one of the clearest examples.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Traceability Rule establishes additional recordkeeping requirements for certain foods on its Food Traceability List.

At the center of the system are what FDA calls Critical Tracking Events and Key Data Elements.

In practical terms, companies handling covered products need to maintain specific information connected to events such as receiving, transforming and shipping food so that products can be traced more rapidly through the supply chain.

The rule's enforcement timeline has been pushed back: Congress directed FDA not to enforce the requirements before July 20, 2028. But the direction of travel has not disappeared. FDA continues working with industry on implementation, including lot-level traceability and the ability to produce relevant records quickly.

The important lesson extends beyond the regulation itself.

When a food-safety problem occurs, the question is no longer simply: Who sold the product?

It is increasingly: Which lot was affected, where did it originate, where did it travel and where is it now?

Better traceability can make that answer faster and more precise.

Europe Is Pushing Traceability Even Closer to Origin

Another powerful example comes from the European Union.

The EU Deforestation Regulation covers commodities including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and wood, along with certain derived products.

For large and medium-sized operators, the regulation is scheduled to begin applying on December 30, 2026; most micro and small operators follow on June 30, 2027.

For covered products, companies must be able to demonstrate that goods are deforestation-free and compliant with applicable laws in the country of production.

And this is where traceability becomes especially significant.

For relevant commodities, traceability can extend all the way back to the geolocation of the plot of land where production occurred.

That is very different from simply having a certificate stating "Product of Brazil."

The market increasingly wants to know not only the country.

It may need to know the place.

The Product Passport Is Becoming Literal

The phrase "passport for global trade" is not merely a metaphor.

Europe's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation establishes a framework for Digital Product Passports.

Depending on future product-specific rules, a digital passport can connect a product, batch or model to structured information accessible through a data carrier such as a barcode or two-dimensional code.

The EU framework specifically contemplates unique identifiers for products, operators and facilities, and says one purpose is to improve traceability across the value chain.

In July 2026, the European Commission adopted implementing rules for the Digital Product Passport registry, another step toward building the infrastructure that will support the system. Not every product traded internationally will suddenly require a digital passport. But the direction is important. Trade documentation is becoming increasingly connected to structured, interoperable product data.

Traceability Requires the Supply Chain to Speak the Same Language

This presents a practical challenge. A supply chain may include a farmer, processor, manufacturer, warehouse, exporter, freight forwarder, importer, distributor and retailer. Traceability only works if relevant information can move between them. That is why standards matter.

GS1's Global Traceability Standard, for example, uses concepts such as Critical Tracking Events and Key Data Elements to identify what happens to a traceable object and what information needs to describe those events. The objective is not simply to collect more data. It is to make the data usable across organizations. A perfect traceability system inside one company provides limited value if that information cannot connect to the next participant in the supply chain.

This Changes Supplier Evaluation

Price will always matter. Quality will always matter. Delivery will always matter. But buyers may increasingly need to evaluate another capability: Can the supplier provide reliable information about the product and its origin? That can mean lot identification. Production records. Facility information. Accurate certificates. Origin documentation. Farm-level data. Processing dates. Shipment records. Or, depending on the industry and market, digital information capable of moving through the supply chain.

A supplier with excellent product but weak records can create risk for the importer. Conversely, a supplier that understands documentation, traceability and information-sharing may become more valuable even if the physical product appears identical.

Traceability Is Not the Same as Sustainability

This distinction matters.

Traceability does not automatically mean that a product is sustainable.

It does not automatically mean that it is ethically produced.

And it does not guarantee quality.

Traceability answers a more fundamental question:

Can we establish what happened to this product and where it came from?

Once that information exists, companies and regulators can use it for different purposes.

Food safety. Regulatory compliance. Deforestation requirements. Quality control. Recall management. Origin verification. Sustainability claims. Anti-counterfeiting. Customs enforcement.

Different objectives — but increasingly dependent on the same underlying capability: trustworthy supply-chain information.

Brazil Has Both an Opportunity and a Challenge

For a major agricultural and food-exporting country such as Brazil, this shift matters.

Brazil supplies the world with commodities, food products and ingredients that often originate far from the final consumer.

As international markets request more detailed information about those products, producers and exporters capable of documenting origin and maintaining reliable records may gain an advantage.

This is especially relevant for agricultural products where supply chains can begin with numerous farms or regional producers before passing through processors, exporters and international buyers.

The opportunity is significant.

But so is the challenge.

Traceability systems cost money. They require training. Data must remain accurate. Smaller producers may need support. Different customers and markets may require different information.

And technology alone cannot fix unreliable records.

A QR code is only as trustworthy as the information behind it.

The Next Competitive Advantage May Be Visibility

Global trade has always required trust.

Traditionally, much of that trust was built through relationships, inspections, certifications and documents.

Those elements will remain important.

But another layer is emerging.

The ability to provide reliable information about a product's journey may increasingly influence whether that product can enter a market, satisfy a customer, respond to a recall or support a compliance claim.

In that sense, traceability is becoming something much larger than a sustainability initiative. It is becoming a form of commercial readiness. The products that move most easily through tomorrow's global supply chains may not simply be those with the best price or quality. They may also be the products that can clearly answer:

Where did I come from?

What happened to me?

And can you prove it?

Why This Matters

International trade is becoming increasingly data-driven. Regulators, buyers and consumers are asking for more precise information about product origin and movement through supply chains. Companies that treat traceability as operational infrastructure — rather than simply a marketing claim — may be better prepared for emerging compliance requirements, food-safety expectations and buyer demands.
